In scenic southeastern Washington State lies the Tri-Cities. Home to agriculture, up and coming vineyards, and the  Hanford Site. Hanford, located just outside of Richland, WA  is the first and oldest plutonium production site in the world. Hanford’s history is rich with lessons, both in terms of technical developments and in terms of secrecy, openness and information management. It was in 1943, that the farming community of Richland, WA  with a population of  about 1,200 was transformed into a nuclear fuel producing community. Part of the Manhattan project Hanford is where they produced the plutonium that would eventually be used in the first atomic bomb that would put an end to World War II. Those that were brought into to work on the Hanford project were not allowed to discuss what they did at the site, even with their families. As the clean-up is goes so goes the economy of the Tri-Cities. The Hanford Site is currently the largest employer in the area, which consists of several contractors such as Bechtel, SAIC, and Lockheed Martin. The Hanford site consists of approx. 560 square miles where the spent nuclear by-products have been disposed of and is slowly being cleaned up. The cleanup continues and is expected to gone on until the year 2030.
Today many companies are involved in the clean-up process, and the latest attempt to turn the spent nuclear fuel into glass logs is under way. Some of those companies and their field teams are equipped with devices known as Peristaltic pumps . They are typically used to pump clean or sterile fluids because the pump cannot contaminate the fluid, or to pump aggressive fluids because the fluid cannot contaminate the pump. Some common applications include pumping aggressive chemicals, high solids slurries and other materials where isolation of the product from the environment, and the environment from the product, are critical.
Masterflex Pump offer different types of portable, full featured peristaltic pumps. The MasterFlex E/S variable speed pump is designed for portability and can run up to 4 hours on the self contained 12 VDC rechargeable battery. The Masterflex L/S peristaltic pump offers it’s users the ability to sample from wastewater, shallow wells and surface water, including lakes, ponds, and holding pools. Because the tubing is inexpensive, it can easily be changed out to avoid cross contamination or lengthy decontamination procedures.
Peristaltic pumps are also called flexible member pumps, flexible tube pumps, dispensing pumps, or dosing pumps. Since the fluid type does not come into contact with any internal parts the use of  peristaltic pumps are chosen for environmental cleanup projects. Since they are reversible the Peristaltic pumps can be flushed to clean out the tubing or hose. Peristaltic pumps are used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and environmental clean up projects. operated. Masterflex Pump offers a professional selection for your sampling and environmental needs.
